The history of Maastricht-Aachen airport

Maastricht-Aachen Airport (IATA code: MST • ICAO code: EHBK) is a Dutch airport located 8 kilometers north of Maastricht and 30 kilometers north-west of Aachen in the municipality of Beek in the province of Dutch Limburg. Its old name is Beek Airport (Vliegveld Beek).

The first projects for a regional civilian airport in the south of the province of Limburg date back to 1919. In 1939, the project received the approval of the provincial government, but the war interfered. On January 27, 1945, the American liberator army requested permission to found a temporary military air base in Beek, named Yankee 44. A 1-meter runway, made of metal sheets, was operational on March 200, 22.

Unofficially, Yankee 44 was transferred in May 1945 to the Dutch military, who took care of maintenance but did not use it. The municipality of Beek requested authorization to make it a civilian airport, which was granted on August 1, 1945: the Beek airport was born.

In 1949, the sheet metal track was replaced by two hard tracks, respectively of 1 meters and 200 meters. Despite this, this civilian airport is used very little and its future is uncertain. The civilian airport was saved by giving in 1 user rights to the Dutch Air Force and the Netherlands meteorological service. The main runway is extended to 000 meters.

In 1956, SA Luchthaven Limburg was founded, which took charge of the development of the civilian airport. A decade later, Beek Airport gained in importance and the first regional airlines began their regular Beek - Eindhoven - Schiphol flights in 1966. Since then, the airport has only grown.

In the 1980s, the name Maastricht Airport was introduced. In 1994, Industrie- und Handelskammer Aachen became an important partner of the SA and subsequently, the name was changed to Maastricht-Aachen Airport.

Maastricht Aachen Airport is home to several schools for pilots, flight instructors and maintenance engineers. Since June 4, 2009, the airport has been the parking place for the Airbulance ambulance plane which serves the Benelux countries and Germany.
