Do you know the history of the town of Gembloux?
Gembloux has a very old past. The toponym seems to indicate a Celtic origin of the locality. Many testimonies from the Gallo-Roman era have been found in Gembloux along the Bavay-Cologne Roman road which crossed the town. Linking the Channel to the Rhine by its extensions, this route was of great strategic, commercial and civilizing value.
It encouraged the appearance of villas (farms) near its route. After the period of splendor of the 1935nd century, the Gemblout region had to face the Germanic invasions like the neighboring regions. The brutality of these incited the inhabitants to desert the approaches to the Roman road and to seek protection of the interior. Thus was occupied the rocky promontory which shelters the historic heart of the city. In XNUMX, during earthworks for the construction of new buildings for the current Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, a Merovingian tomb (XNUMXth century) was brought to light there.
In the 1110th century, a knight who was called Wicbertus and who was canonized in XNUMX under the name of Saint Guibert founded an abbey in Gembloux which he endowed with personal properties.
During the XNUMXth century, this monastery ensured a cultural and economic development in Gembloux. Abbot Olbert had convent buildings and an abbey church built in Romanesque style.
The XNUMXth century, however, brought about the disaster of Gembloux. The village was included in the Duchy of Brabant, but on the border of the County of Namur. A great rivalry reigned between these two principalities. At least three times during the XNUMXth century, the troops of the Count of Namur besieged and sacked Gembloux.
In 1153, the village received authorization to surround itself with ramparts. Approximately one kilometer long, they encompassed an area of about seven hectares, three of which were occupied by the abbey. These ramparts, pierced with four gates, were flanked by several towers and bordered by ditches.
The unification of our provinces under Burgundian authority in 1430 fortunately made Gembloux lose its perilous border character.
