In 1197, a Godefroid d'Otenies, Lord of Gentines, husband of Beatrice de Limale is attested.

In 1213, the parish dedicated to Saint Remi is mentioned and a 1260 statement indicates a castle, a market, a mill, a brewery and a free tavern.

In the XNUMXth century, Ottignies belonged to the Sombreffe family. She then passed, with Mousty, to the Virnembourg family.

From 1602 to 1731, the Spangens, a family whose castle was erected on the current territory of Rotterdam, were lords of Ottignies. In 1731, the family sold the seigneury of Ottignies to the Palma-Carillo family who kept it until the end of the feudal regime in 1809.

The municipality of Ottignies was then created. It was part of the canton of Wavre, the district of Nivelles, the department of Dyle.

In 1819, the first mayor of Ottignies was Baron P. de Marcq de Tiège.

The industrial period

The village developed from 1850 with the opening of a paved road and the construction of the railway, which attracted many factories, workers and railway workers. In 1850, Ottignies was chosen to the detriment of Wavre as an important railway junction, at the intersection of the Brussels-Luxembourg line and the Louvain-Charleroi line, which belonged to different private companies.

When the La Hulpe-Gembloux section opens, a stop is planned in Ottignies. A provisional station building was installed in 1858, before a neoclassical-style station was built in 1884 by Charles Licot. In the 1920s, a locomotive depot, which has now disappeared, was built along the tracks, on land located in the town of Limelette.

Ottignies was at stake in violent fighting between the French 2nd North African Infantry Division and the German army, during the Battle of the Dyle in 1940, causing the destruction of a large number of houses5. The town of Ottignies - especially its train station - was bombed by the Allies in April and May 1944.
