A look back at the incredible story of Tomorrowland!
Tomorrowland's story begins in 2003, when brothers Manu and Michiel Beers, organizers of Dutch electronic music events ID&T (known for their notorious festivals such as Mystery Land, Sensation and Thunderdome), came up with the idea of a festival that would become one of the biggest music events in the world.
On August 14, 2005, the first edition of Tomorrowland was born in Boom, Belgium, and welcomed around 10 people for an unparalleled magical experience. The big names of the electronic scene such as Sven Väth, Sasha, Armin van Buuren, Justice and Erol Alkan ensured quality programming for the first year.
The second edition, on July 30, 2006, attracted fifteen thousand visitors from Belgium and neighboring countries, with eight stages and enough space to accommodate three thousand campers on the site, thus increasing the magical dimension of the event.
From then on, festival-goers from all over the world started traveling to Tomorrowland, which became a global event. In 2007, more than 20 people attended the festival, which for the first time lasted two days.
In 2008, the festival welcomed 50 visitors, including 000 campers, which was a first in Belgium for such an event. This paved the way for a prosperous future for Tomorrowland.
In 2009, the festival sold out all of its tickets for the first time in its history, partly thanks to the presence of Moby. It was an incredible moment for the festival organizers.
In 2011, the festival received over two million requests for tickets, prompting organizers to add a third day. The 180 passes for the weekend were sold out in less than a day, except for the day tickets on Friday.
In 2012, Tomorrowland officially became a worldwide festival, broadcast live on the Internet. The official YouTube channel was opened and the website received 2 million hits.
In 2013, the festival sold out in record time, with the participation of more than 200 nationalities. This prompted the organizers to offer festival-goers the possibility of booking “travel packages” to facilitate their trip.
In 2014, the festival was a celebration of shared love and happiness among all festival-goers. The organizers believe that the principle of life is simple: you just need to generate more love and even more happiness to be happy.
Finally, in 2015, festival-goers were treated to a gigantic fireworks display and a live performance by the Belgian Symphony Orchestra playing the title “The symphony of unity” as well as the title of Avicii – Level.
