Frankfurt am Main Airport (German: Flughafen Frankfurt am Main) (IATA code: FRA • ICAO code: EDDF), located in Frankfurt am Main, is the main German airport. It is also the third airport in Europe serving the largest number of international destinations behind London-Heathrow airport and Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle airport. It is managed by the company Fraport AG, which gave it its nickname, while the protest movements of the period 1964-1984 earned it the other nickname of Flughafen Frankfurt / Main AG.

1930s

Inaugurated in 1935 as "Airport of the Rhine and the Main and naval air base", it has grown to become one of the main airports on the continent. The airport has two terminals, connected by an automatic train line, the SkyLine, two kilometers long. The southern part of the airport was occupied until December 2005 by the American base of the United States Air Force at Rhein-Main Air Base. Aviation fuel is supplied by NATO's central European pipeline network1.

1960s

While the airport is located only ten kilometers south of the city center2, in 1964 a detailed project was published threatening the destruction of a vast wooded area of 350 hectares of primary forest2, through the construction of 'a third runway, the “Startbahn West” 2.
